What targets have the German government set for the expansion of renewable energy generation?

By 2020 renewable energy should provide for 30 % in the electricity sector, 14% in the heating, and 12–15% in the fuel sector. If this target is met, it will be possible to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40%.

What contribution does renewable energy make to the economy?

On the one hand it is a job-generating machine: since 1998 the number of those employed in the industry has quadrupled to 280,000. On the other hand, the expansion of alternative energy is associated with a high added value, because investment in the industry is rising. In 2008 a total of 13.1 billion euros was invested in the sector, 20% up on the previous year.

How does a biogas plant work?

Biogas plants ferment biomass – such as slurry or energy plants – in large quantities. This produces combustible biogas that is usually used as fuel for heating power stations that work by combining heat and electricity generation. When the electricity is produced the heat also produced is used instead of just releasing it as waste.
